Local Governments Thankful for Passage of HB 614 to Distribute Remaining CARES Funds
September 24, 2020
The County Commissioners Association of Ohio, Ohio Municipal League, Ohio Township Association and Ohio Mayors Alliance sincerely thank Senate President Larry Obhof, House Speaker Bob Cupp and the members of the Ohio General Assembly for their continued support of Ohio local government through today’s passage of House Bill 614.
HB 614 would distribute the remaining $650 million of federal CARES Act funds to Ohio counties, municipalities and townships that did not receive a direct distribution from the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
As local governments continue to provide frontline response efforts to COVID-19, local governments have relied on CARES funds to support a wide array of coronavirus relief efforts. CARES funds have been used by local governments for increased testing, grants to small businesses, aid to nonprofits to assist individuals facing hardship, support for public health and safety efforts, PPE procurement and other initiatives.
Without this infusion of federal funds, these relief efforts would not be possible. Local government budgets are facing weakened and unstable revenue streams while demand for local services remains strong. These federal resources are needed to stabilize local government operations, energize local economies and continue crucial public health and safety efforts.
Local governments are deeply appreciative for the General Assembly’s action today on HB 614 and they look forward to future partnerships with the state to assist local response efforts.
